Heroes 101: Don't Move That Body!

If you are a decent person, it is a natural "reflex" to help others in need. However, you must be careful in order to prevent injuring victims in need. After a recent controversy involving footage of a celebrity pulled from wreckage, emergency response experts are reminding the public to "look" before they leap into action.

According to Alarm.org, it is recommended that people seeking to help victims (with broken bones) should wait until emergency professionals arrive. If the victim is in immediate danger, experts advise that dragging a person to safety is better than lifting.

#BringBackOurGirls : What Is 'The Big Picture?'

As a skilled web designer and graphic artist, Kamilah S.  Autmon has an eye for detail. She is social media enthusiast and entrepreneur who uses her technical expertise to help solve problems for clients. Outside of her professional work, Autmon uses social media to bring awareness to global issues which affect her personally. From her perspective, the latest #BringBackOurGirls social media campaign is only the beginning of movement. Yet, it appears as if the majority only sees it as a political trend.

Autmon believes that the crisis in Nigeria opens up the door for a discussion on female empowerment. "If women had more of the upper hand over there, they would actually get somewhere instead of having an antiquated existence," she said. "Ironically, those places have all the resources for riches and are more behind the times than other nations."

For mothers of the kidnapped girls, the media appears to be their only resource. Through protests and social media, the mothers' efforts have led to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry becoming involved in the rescue efforts.

On Tuesday, Secretary Kerry offered assistance to Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan.

And celebrities continue to show their support for the movement via social media.

In Autmon's eyes, it is important for media consumers to stay abreast of global affairs--not just pop culture.

"From tech to world news to finance, it's my duty as a person to know everything that's out there."

Don't 'Wing It' Alone: 5 Reasons To Take Self Defense Classes

In a world where the police only respond to "serious" emergencies, more people are turning to self defense to protect the person who matters the most: the one in the mirror!

Contrary to popular assumptions, self defense is not just a thing for scrawny folks. (Look at the big guy in the picture above. I'm sure he doesn't need martial arts to let folks know that he means business.)

And it's not just a thing for women or Will Smith's character on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air."

Men of all ages, physical builds, and income levels can benefit from taking self defense classes.

Here are five reasons why:

Self Defense Helps Improve Discipline
Before the ass-kicking begins, most self defense instructors like Matt Johnson (pictured above far right) will explain to students that with great power comes great responsibility.

Known as "Sifu Matt," the veteran instructor teaches students about self control and meditation.

It is a strategy of "choosing your battles wisely" to avoid fighting back when escape is a safer option.

Self Defense Provides Gun-Free Alternatives To Conflicts

Sometimes, conceal and carry is not the answer. The safest alternative to using a gun is learning how to defend yourself without one.

Self Defense Is A Gift That Keeps Giving

"When you learn, teach; When you get, give."

You can share more than video game tips with your friends. It will help keep them from becoming defeated by real-life monsters!

Self Defense Can Boost Your Confidence

When you know that you have the tools to defend yourself, you will feel more confident and less afraid.

Self Defense Connects You With New Friends

If you are tired of hanging with couch potatoes or chatting with Facebook friends, self defense classes offer a positive social environment.

What are you waiting for? ;)

Wing Chun (Part 1): 'A Self Defense Art'

As the old saying goes: "Crime happens in seconds and police come in minutes."

In Chicago, residents  have been targeted in a series of strong arm robberies. With an understaffed police force, some victims have been left with no choice but to chase down their attackers. In most cases, they have been successful. However, a very dangerous situation can arise if one approaches a criminal without proper training.

For those seeking a safer alternative, a self-defense art known as Ving Tsun (pronounced "wing chun") has become a viable way to protect themselves.

At Ving Tsun Self Defense Academy in the city's Pilsen neighborhood, Matt Johnson (pictured right) teaches the art to students from all walks of life. He says that the system only contains 3 empty-hand forms as compared to other styles of kung fu which may have 20 forms and take longer to master.

"The fighting style in [Wing Chun] is very close quarters combat. We don't have a lot of high kicking; we don't have a lot of fancy movement," Johnson says. "It's a system that's based on theory rather than an accumulation of hundreds and hundreds of techniques."

With over 25 years of experience, the man known as "Sifu" to his class goes to great lengths to make sure that he trains people who will not use their skills for wrongdoing. Prospective students must interview with him before being chosen for lessons so that he can gauge their level of sincerity.

"You don't want to give [Wing Chun] to people who are going to use it in the wrong way. Some people have ideas of martial arts; they like to bully other people... use it for sport fighting and stuff like that," Johnson explains.

"Wing Chun in its purest form is a self defense art."

Chicago Man Stops Crime With His Feet

As Minister Rahim Aton stood outside of currency exchanges on the city's South Side last Friday, he made customers feel more comfortable about going inside.

He is the founder of the We Care Coalition which  recently created this initiative to ensure that the elderly and disabled can avoid robbery while going to cash their checks. Members of the group stand guard out front while customers make transactions and watch for potential muggers. Without this program in place, the men working foot patrol feel that more people would be in harm's way.

Across the city, citizens have been experiencing more harm than good in some unsuspecting areas.

On Wednesday, the Chicago police issued a community alert informing residents of Hyde Park, Bronzeville, and Washington Park about people being forcibly robbed while walking down the street or near their vehicles.

According to WBBM's Bernie Tafoya, the alert featured mentions of incidents which occurred early morning, late afternoon and early evening. In addition,  police have not received consisent descriptions about the robbers and there is no one currently in custody.

Aton believes that the We Care Coalition's foot patrol could help reduce robberies across the city. But he says that it is hard to provide the necessary manpower it will take to see a change.

"I want to be worldwide; I want to be citywide. One of my main [challenges] is getting more people to volunteer," the 54 year-old minister and musician told The Z City.

Formerly known as Darrell Wilson, Minister Aton started the We Care Coalition in 2003 as a nondenominational extension of his first organization called The Original Men In Black. [The group formed in 1991, six years before the film "Men In Black" was released.]

The group briefly disbanded but reformed recently to alleviate some of the crime in neighborhoods such as Englewood.

Aton believes that the volunteering spirit of the organization is what makes it work well.

"Most people do it for money, but I tell people [who I help] to 'pass it down'."
